The Cocca was a merchant and war vessel of the North Sea, the Mediterranean and the Adriatic Sea, equipped with a main mainmast and two small auxiliary masts, whose main feature is the to have a high and narrow forecastle, equipped with a triangular and almost horizontal deck.
A characteristic of this vessel are the side openings for taking on horses and livestock, and it is was designed mainly to transport troops.
It was mentioned for the first time in the 11th century, and in relation to the Mediterranean Sea in the 13th century.
These boats were not easily boarded by enemies in the event of battle, thanks to the high forecastle and stern quarterdeck. They were therefore very difficult to conquer.
The Cocche often sailed together with the caravels and carracks.
These types of ships were widely used by the Republic of Venice.
