The Galleon is a sailing ship for war or commercial use from the 16th and 17th centuries, a type of transitional vessel between the galley and the ship of the line. It was born out of necessity to carry out long voyages, when the galley, which in turn was a transition vessel between a rowing ship and a sailing ship, was no longer suitable for traveling to distant overseas areas. Towards the middle of the 15th century the galleon is the best vessel after the carrack, with high sides, a little more long and longer faster than the latter.
The bow has a very long front part, reminiscent of the galley, hence the name. It was a galleon with a bow "like a carrack".
This type of bow with the carrack shape was maintained on some ships until 1590. It usually had two decks, a truncated and angled stern, which ended with a stern castle with two or three decks. The largest section was low in correspondence with the main mast and on the bow behind the foremast, a bow castle of regular quadrangular shape rose.
The castle and the bow are the main characteristics of the galleon.
At the extremity on the bow, at the height of the main deck, a figurehead was installed. The first galleons of the 16th century were mainly warships. A large galon of the early 17th century had three or four masts and a bowsprit. Under the bowsprit there was a square sail.
The foremast was high ¾ the length of the waterline and was equipped with three square sails. The mainmast was as high as the waterline. This too was equipped with three square sails. In the center of the stern castle there was a small mizzen mast, half as high as the of the mainmast and equipped with a lateen sail. Behind this there was occasionally a fourth, small tree (counter-mezzanine), quite low, installed at the height of the summit. of the rudder. This too was equipped with a lateen sail. A crow's nest was placed on each mast.
The largest galleons small ones had the same shape as large ones, they differed only in size and the number of masts and sails. They had three trees. Two square sails were placed on the foremast, as on the mainmast, while a lateen sail was placed on the mizzenmast. A crow's nest was placed on the foremast and mainmast.
Around halfway By the 16th century, galleons became true warships, and by the early 17th century the name galleon was synonymous with ship of the line. Merchant galleons were used for long voyages to recently discovered overseas areas. The favorite galleons were mainly Spanish and those from Ragusa (modern Dubrovnik), used for the transport of silver from Peru and Mexico. They sailed in groups, fleets. In those times the galleons were more larger than caravels, but larger small of the Ragusa carracks. Their tonnage varied from 200 to 500 tons.
The Ragusini galleons, partially different in structural characteristics from the other galleons of the period and from the large and spacious carracks, were called Argosie, whose name derives from Ragusie, an adjective of Ragusa ( Dubrovnik). The level of popularity of these boats Ragusine is demonstrated that the English created the literal expression Argosy ship for these. These types of ships were widely used by the Republic of Venice.
