The barque is a type of vessel with three or more masts of which the foremast and mainsail are armed with square sails, while the mizzen one is armed with a gaff sail (mainsail) and countermainsail. In English terms it is defined as “barque” or boat. The word boat comes from the Latin boat which comes from Spanish or Italian. The Latin word boat can be derive from the Greek baris or Celtic barc, a term used for an Egyptian vessel.

The past of the barque Stefano di Rijeka is closely connected with the Bacic family from Dubrovnik. When the grain trader and shipowner Nicholas Bacic from Dubrovnik arrived in Rijeka in 1865, he began the history of the Rijeka branch of that family. Nikola Bacic had numerous sailing ships for long voyages, among which the brigs Caterina V, Giuseppina Francesca, Giovanna Maria, Due brothers-in-law, Nuova Fama, Eugenio, Two sisters-in-law, Vincenza, Risorto, Antal and Stefano dominated.
His son Stefano Bacic, a young captain for long voyages, manages the sailing ships Vincenzo and Stefano. The brigantine Stefano is it was like this named in his honor.
Unfortunately, Stefano Bacic is died young at the age of just 24 years old. He was buried in Rijeka. The brigantine Stefano was built in 1873 in Rijeka, in the shipyard of the Brazzoduro brothers. During 1875, the brigantine Stefano began sailing to Australia. It is It was during his third trip which was wrecked near Cape Cloates on the Australian coast on 27 October 1875. The ship was traveling from Cardiff to Hong Kong.
Among more of 20 crew members only two survived, cadet Miho Bacic and sailor Ivan Juric. Miho Bacic was the nephew of the shipowner Nicholas Bacic.
After returning to their homeland in 1876, the surviving members of the crew told what happened to him. happened on the brigantine Stefano to the Dubrovnik Dominican Stefan Skura.
Furthermore, on May 16, 1876, Miho Bacic sent a letter to his relatives in Dubrovnik where he described the unfortunate fate of his companions on the brigantine Stefano and life among the Australian Aborigines which is lasting six months.
