La Brazzera is an Adriatic sailing transport vessel, whose hull varies from 15 to 17 meters in length.
It has found its wide diffusion both on the Italian and Croatian coasts of the Adriatic.
It’ already present in the sixteenth century as the logical result of the evolution of the round ship, navis rotunda, an ancient transport ship.
Since the fifteenth century, some types of Brac boats differed from others in the Adriatic and bore the name and characteristics of Bracana. In the sixteenth century there were successively in the Adriatic Bragagnu of Chioggia, and Braganja of Brac. Initially the fishermen called it ćozota (chioggiotta), while the Italian fishermen of Chioggia and Venice called it brazzera, from which today's name in Croatian Bracera derives.
It has not always had the same construction characteristics and the same purpose, and it wasn't exactly defined as the most recent bracera from the eighteenth century.
The term bracera is found in Kotor and along the entire eastern coast of the Adriatic, across the Venice Lagoon to Ancona. The first written confirmation of this vessel on the Croatian Adriatic coast comes from Venetian sources, brazier, 1556 and the first Croatian sources mention a similar name, bracijera in 1878.
There is no a substantial and univocal origin of this name. The researchers reached different conclusions. Some of these believe that the name derives from the Island of Brac, where it may have originated, while others believe that it originated from the main propulsion system, rowing, from brachium, arm, the muscles of the arm. Others think that its name derives from the type of use of small sailing boats, such as the galley, spurrara, manzera, etc.
