MARISSTELLA LTD ART. 923 - FALKUŠA - CARGO FISHING BOAT FROM THE ISLAND OF VIS

Scale 1:20

Length: 70.40 cm

Gaeta Falkusa is It was designed to meet the needs of the Komiža fishermen, who for centuries sailed and fished in an area 42 miles from Palagruža, which was rich in fish and over which they had jurisdiction. Having loaded the boat with salt for salting the fish, fishing equipment and other objects, they set sail during the day taking advantage of the Mistral, the North-West wind, and returned in the evening or night, sailing taking advantage of the South wind.
This way of sailing required two types of boats: cargo and fishing, and this was exactly the role that the Falkusa played.
When they sailed to their destination or when they returned from it, the Gaeta Falkusa was fitted out with a mast and sails.
Once they reached their destination, they left the mast, sails and bowsprit on the beach so as not to be hindered during fishing by moving the nets and fishing equipment themselves.
During the return journey they salted the fish without wasting time.
Gaeta Falkusa was built in such a way that a crew of five could land in coastal areas where there was no safe harbor.
