The Illyrian warship Liburna was a rowing warship used from the 8th to the 1st century BC.
Its name derives from the Liburnians, who were the first to build this type of ship, which was characterized by a good versatility and high speed.
The Liburnians stood out for their good maneuverability. in the battle of Anzio (31 BC), so much so that the Romans adopted them as the best warships. Their name soon became well known throughout Europe and for several centuries was synonymous with warship. Subsequently they evolved into biremes and triremes, which many writers call Liburne, but which should be distinguished from the true Liburne.
