The Ragusa galley (now Dubrovnik) was an integral part of the Ragusa war fleet, which in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had only a few warships, at most ten. This had been formed solely due to frequent pirate harassment and looting of shipping vessels during that period. The ships were stationed in Ragusa and Mali Ston.
Other coastal Croatian centers were equipped with this type of vessel along the eastern coast of the Adriatic: Kotor, Omis, Senj and others.
The Galley of Ragusa was controlled by the wind and by the rowers, Galeotti, who were both sailors and soldiers, but also criminals condemned to row in the State Ships (hence the term).
Similar type of Galley is It was widely used by the Republic of Venice.
The main characteristic of these boats was its maneuverability. and speed. They were used for military purposes, patrolling, customs checks, courier services and for the transport of diplomats or high-ranking civilian personnel. In general also for the transport of material at state expense.
