These types of ships used for commercial and war purposes were built between today's cities and towns. of Zara and Fiume, and in the Novilara area on the Italian Adriatic coast.

Historians have reconstructed this type of ship following the drawings engraved on the Novilara tombstone in Pesaro. A battle between Novilara and Liburna is depicted, where identical boats were used. It is a model whose rostrum was used both to facilitate stranding on land, but also to break through the hull of other ships in battle, clearly visible in the image. In the drawing it is It is also clearly shown that the stern rudder was secured with a rope, which is historically attested and whose use is confirmed however only in the 15th century.
