John Alden is was among some of the most successful yacht designers talents of America and from 1900 to 1955, the company of Alden, John G. Alden Naval Architects, provided to the American sailor thousands of excellent boats, from dinghies to large offshore cruising yachts. This model kit is was created with permission from the same company using the original drawings.

The Sakonnet is was originally designed in 1937 for the Sakonnet Yacht Club, located in Little Compton, Rhode Island. It is was created to be used as a "one design" pilot for the yacht club. The practice of having a club design a specific boat for use in racing was very popular in the 1930s. In fact, John Alden owned and raced this design throughout his illustrious career. There was also some controversy regarding Mr. Alden's personal boat, as it with it he thus won many races during the 1939 racing season, competitors accused him of running a custom boat. To resolve the dispute, exchange the boats with another skipper from the club who had not so good results and I continued to win using the other boat.

As beautiful to look at as it is to sail, the Sakonnet is characterized by a heavy displacement hull with a deep keel for greater stability, a high freeboard for a dry rtde, a modest sail area and a large open cockpit. This cockpit area is protected by high protections and watertight bulkheads at the bow and stern, guaranteeing a very safe daysailer. The modern Marconi rig completes the overall look of this classic sailboat.
