The frigate Hermione (the name of Helen's daughter, later known in mythology as Helen of Troy and Menelaus) was built in Rochefort (France) in 1779. Length of the ship: 42 m, width 11 m, speed: 9 -13 knots, crew of approximately 300 officers and sailors. Armament: 32 guns, mostly 12 lb. As the first French ship, she had the underwater part of her hull covered with copper plates. This coating prevented the growth of algae and barnacles on the hull, which could significantly reduce speed. of the ship. At the start of the Anglo-French War of 1778, she patrolled the Bay of Biscay, escorting convoys and chasing privateers. It became famous when in 1780 it brought General Lafayette to the United States to support the rebels in the American Revolutionary War. Lafayette landed in Boston welcomed by representatives of France and the Thirteen Colonies. The sailing ship played a role in the Battle of Cape Henry in March 1781 and in a major action in July 1781. After the end of the American Revolutionary War, Hermione returned to the ship. in France in 1782. While escorting a convoy to Brest, it ran aground at Le Croisic in 1793 due to a pilot's navigation error. Attempts to save the frigate failed. The hull broke and the ship sank. In 1984, the wreck of the sailing ship was found by an amateur archaeologist. Parts of the wreck have been recovered. In 1997 the decision was made to build a full-scale replica of the frigate. On April 18, 2015, the vessel began its journey to the United States from Rochefort, France. In June 2015, the frigate reached Yorktown. He also called Boston and Philadelphia. The strong traditions of France's participation in the American War of Independence are highlighted by the fact that the Society of Friends of Hermione - La Fayette operates here. The president of this Company is former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger.
