HISTORY

The credit for America's success in winning the War of 1812 belongs in part to the numerous privateers who embarked to fight against the might of England.
According to Falconer's Dictionary of the Marine (1768), "I Corsairs are warships armed and manned by particular merchants, and provided with commissions by the State to sail against and annoy the enemy by taking, sinking or burning their vessel". The commission, authorized by a letter of marque, authorized merchants to appropriate for their own use any prize (actual capture of a vessel) made by them, in addition to receiving an indemnity. monetary for each prisoner taken. Although overall the Corsairs, as irregular forces, were no match for the British regular cruisers, they inflicted enormous damage on the enemy. Among the four most important privateers of note was the fast brig Prince de Neufchatel captained by J. Ordronaux of New York. A superbly built vessel of 310 tons, she mounted 18 guns and originally possessed a crew of 150 men. The Prince de Neufchatel was supposedly built by Christian Bergh in New York in 1812-13 and was named after Berthier, one of Napoleon's marshals of the time. One of the most great corsairs. She measured 107' 6 inches at the waterline and possessed equal to the design of the clipper ships built 40 years later. Since It had a size and shape that could reach speeds. high and contain more firepower, its form was given to an entire fleet of opium cutters. Armament for privateers was usually sixteen 12-pounder carronades and two 18-pounders as hunting guns. All were mounted on carriages to allow greater freedom positioning and to accommodate the most important bulwarks tall found on corsairs
