HISTORY

The USS Confederacy, a 36-gun frigate of the Continental Navy, was launched at Norwich, Connecticut, on November 8, 1778. A beautiful ship with ornately carved ornaments, she was plagued by bad luck throughout her career. In October 1779, under the command of Captain Seth Harding, he was on a diplomatic mission to bring the French minister back to France. Also on board were John Jay (the American Prime Minister of Spain) and his family. During the passage the Confederacy encountered in a hurricane near Newfoundland and was completely dismasted. Captain Harding is managed to steer the ship south. He reached Martinique in mid-June. December with 6 feet of water in the hold. He stayed there for several months for repairs. He returned to Philadelphia on April 20, 1780 only to find the need of more repairs extended. In October, it’s was damaged again in a collision with another vessel in Philadelphia Harbor. The year 1781 did not bring better luck. While returning home from the West Indies with military stores and other supplies, the Confederacy was forced to fly its flag on two British ships: the 44-gun HMS Roebuck and the 32-gun Orpheus. Subsequently it is was brought into British service as HMS Confederate.

ADMIRALTY MODELS, A BRITISH TRADITION

During the 17th and 18th centuries, the Admiralty of the Royal Navy required builders to submit a proposed ship model for construction. Only then, after consideration, would the board approve funding for it. Called Admiralty models, these were some of the best ever made. They were boarded up with the hull and deck exposed to allow inspection of the ship's architecture, deck furnishings and decorative works in a three-dimensional format.

The kit, as an Admiralty model, shows  incredibly rich details of her decks, furnishings and accessories. Furthermore, the stern quarterdeck is left without planks on the port side, leaving the large cabin and gun deck visible. The plank-over-bulkhead construction features laser-cut basswood and walnut components, including sills, architraves and mullions. We supply almost 400 lime and walnut strips, over 250 boxwood blocks (for cannon), deadeyes and 300 eyebolts. Other fittings include brass strips, tubing, nails, and snap rings; cast metal rudder and anchors; blackened wire and four gauges of rigging rope.

Twenty-eight cast Britannia 12-pounder guns and 4 six-pounder guns on wooden carriages replicate Confederate armament. Figureheads, star decorations and other ornamental pieces are also cast metal. Two realistically detailed ship's boats are board-on-bulkhead mini-kits with the center bulkheads removed, leaving the fully framed shells attached to the running beams. Kit includes laser cut display stand.

Designed by master model maker Chuck Passaro, Model Shipways' Confederacy is a monumental achievement. Five sheets of plans leave no detail unrecorded, and the 150-page step-by-step illustrated instruction manual is a must-have. the most complete never made.
