The privateer RATTLESNAKE was built in Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1779 or 1780, presumably to a design by John Peck. It was owned by by John Andrews and her captain was Mark Clark. At various times it carried from 14 to 20 guns and its complement consisted of 85 men. He received his first commission on 12 June 1781, but may have been commissioned earlier. She was captured off the American coast in 1781 by the British 44-gun ship ASSURANCE. It is was taken to England, where she is was renamed CORMORANT and its lines were drawn. His original jokes survive on archive at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwhich. With its low deadrise and very sharp bow lines the RATTLESNAKE had to be very fast. She had a detached forecastle and quarterdeck, connected by gangways, which were not boarded during battles. In August 1783 it was again called RATTLESNAKE.
