The "Golden Hind" took its name from the golden figure that appears on the family coat of arms of Lord C. C. Hatton, who financed the Sir Francis Drake's circumnavigation of the globe. Largest Galleon small, the 'Golden Hind' was no different in construction from ships of her class. Sober lines, small dimensions, absence of decorations with the exception of the transom, low bow deck and classic masts. On 13 December 1 577 Sir Francis Drake, aboard the galleon 'Golden Hind', together with four other ships, set sail. for the longest journey famous in English naval history. After having crossed with difficulty the Strait of Magellan, due to the frightening storms in which two of the ships were wrecked, docked in the port of Valparaiso. Later followed the coasts of Chile and Perù sacking Spanish ports and ships and capturing enormous booty. It goes back then up to California, probably trying to discover the long-sought Northwest Passage. Continued his journey towards the Moluccas and Java, doubled the Cape of Good Hope and returned after three years in England, completing his world tour.
