The schooner America was designed by George Steers and built in William Brown's shipyard in 1851. Her name was still today the most important and celebrated in the history of world yachting. America, under the command of Dick Brown, a pilot from New York, set off. for England in June 1851 to participate in the regatta which was to take place on 22 August around the Isle of Wight, without any compensation for difference in tonnage or for rigging. The prize offered was a cup of 100 guineas. America achieved a crushing victory over the English squadron. The words that the signalman transmitted to Queen Victoria are famous and have gone down in the history of the United States: 'America first, your Majesty. There is no second'. America presents notable innovations in the shape of the hull, especially with regards to the water lines and the main section, the latter being much further back than the hulls of the time. It also had a low draft, refined lines, a light displacement and a new cut of the sails, considerably more thin and made of cotton fabric. America has had a long history and is was torn down in 1946. Only the sculpted eagle on her stern survives at the New York Yacht Club. The 100 Guineas Cup became the 'America's Cup' and is still popular today. the name of the largest regatta important in the world.
